The Fokker D.XXI was a standard day fighter of the Militaire Luchtvaart (ML) in
May 1940. At the time of German invasion, the ML has had 28 aircraft of thiy
type in operational condition, of which 20 with 1. and 2. Jacht Vliegtuig
Afdeling (JaVa), based at De Kooy and Schiphol, respectivelly. The 1. JaVA
launched eleven of these fighters to intercept incoming German aircraft on the
morning of 10 May, and in an air combat over De Kooy, Lieutenant Heman
Doppenberg has shot down one Messerschmitt Bf 109 flying "219". This Fokker
D.XXI thus became the only fighter of this type know to have shot down a
Bf 109E. Badly damaged in the same air combat, the plane was later repaired
at De Kooy and sent to the Combined JaVA at Buksloot, two days later. There it
was flown on four additional combat missions before being destroyed at Schiphol
airfield, on the morning of 14 May 1940.
