On 12 September 1995, a gas balloon (D-CARIBBEAN) participating in the historic Coupe Gordon Bennett international balloon race was shot down by an attack helicopter of the Belarus air defense forces with the loss of the lives of the two pilots on board, Alan Fraenckel and John Stuart-Jervis, American citizens representing the Virgin Islands Aero Club.
